Saw Wes Anderson's Asteroid City

Posted by DioShiba - June 24th, 2023

Bit of a different direction for my blog but... I think it's worth talking about

I was skeptical at first but ultimately I found myself liking it a lot.

To copy and paste a review I did for Rotten Tomatoes: This is not a movie that is everyone's cup of tea. Arguably, some may find it a bit pretentious and I can get where people are coming from with the criticisms they have. Perchance, it could be justified that it does seem like a pointless film where a lot of troupes are recycled. And yet... I can't help but enjoy Asteroid City

I'm going to be real on this, but the movie hinges on absurdism in both it's plot A and Plot B story. I was caught off guard by this because the advertising almost indicated something different until I found out Wes Anderson was the one directing this.

Sure, we could talk about how he got top name celebrities for the film, or how he managed to get away with a moment where we get a brief glimpse at Scarlett Johansson's naked body in a PG-13 film... Or even the fact that there is an alien. The thing is that is not the crux of the film as much as it is Jason Schwartzman's character, Jones Hall and the very confusion he has with the play itself that is being written by playwright Conrad Earp, as played by Edward Norton.

And while I don't wish to spoil the film, I do think that the message is clear to the careful eyed observer on who Conrad truly is, which is both foreshadowed in the beginning, and lamp shaded at the climax of the play when it all comes down to a rather chaotic scene toward the end and how it's meta pokes a hole in the meaning of nihilism (Or those who hold a particular faith) which in some fairness I do think Asteroid City criticism on that particular philosophy as much as it does a few other perspectives.

The only thing that prevents me from giving this a full 5 stars however, is that there were some things in the play itself that could have been expanded on. Hopefully by the time the Blu-Ray comes out there are some deleted scenes that will expand on some of the other characters and what they are thinking, but I digress for what I saw on the widespread release I am pretty well content with the film.

There is truth to a moment in the film that "You can't wake up if you don't fall asleep" as for the meaning well, you may just have to put two and two together to figure that one out.

But I supposed if you feel that the film is too pretentious to your liking then, there's no point in dwelling on it. As for those who enjoy absurdist humor to it's full delight however, well you'll find the exact glimmer of hope you will need in the context of the movie.

For me, 4.5 out of 5 Stars.
